Ira Kalet received the B.A. degree in physics from Cornell University in 1965 and the Ph.D. degree in theoretical physics from Princeton University in 1968. His dissertation was on "Low Energy Theorems for Meson Production by Real and Virtual Photons". He held research and faculty appointments at the University of Washington Physics Department, the Robert Hutchins School of Liberal Studies at Sonoma State College, and the Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania before coming to the University of Washington in 1978 in the then newly formed Department of Radiation Oncology.

In the Fall of 2000, the University of Washington Board of Regents approved a proposal to establish a graduate program in Biomedical and Health Informatics. Dr. Kalet helped to establish this program and served until 2004 as its initial Graduate Program Coordinator.

Current teaching assignments:

He is also writing a monograph entitled "Principles of Biomedical Informatics", to appear at the end of 2007 or early 2008.

Dr. Kalet is a member of the American Association for Artificial Intelligence (AAAI), and the American Medical Informatics Association.
