Education:

Ira Kalet received the B.A. degree in physics from Cornell University in 1965 and the Ph.D. degree in theoretical physics from Princeton University in 1968. His dissertation was on "Low Energy Theorems for Meson Production by Real and Virtual Photons". He held research and faculty appointments at the University of Washington Physics Department, the Robert Hutchins School of Liberal Studies at Sonoma State College, and the Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania before coming to the University of Washington in 1978 in the then newly formed Department of Radiation Oncology.

Research interests:

The Prism project:
Computer graphic simulation of radiation treatments for cancer, using advanced software development methodology

The CNTS project:computer control of radiation therapy machines

•Artificial intelligence applications to cancer treatment, particularly expert systems. Dr. Kalet was the Program Chairman for the Artificial Intelligence in Medicine (AIM) Workshop in 1987.

Teaching:

In the Fall of 2000, the University of Washington Board of Regents approved a proposal to establish a graduate program in Biomedical and Health Informatics. Dr. Kalet is the current Graduate Program Coordinator.

Memberships:

Dr. Kalet is a member of the American Association for Artificial Intelligence (AAAI), and the American Medical Informatics Association.
